Gay Democrat 2020 presidential candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg, dubbed "Alfred E. Neuman" by President Donald Trump, responded to a bill passed in Alabama that bans all abortions unless there is a "serious health risk. Buttigieg said women must have "access to safe and legal abortion."
"The Alabama legislature is ignoring science, criminalizing abortion, and punishing women. Instead, the government's role should be to make sure all women have access to comprehensive affordable care, and that includes safe and legal abortion," Buttigieg wrote.
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed the "Human Life Protection Act" into law on Tuesday that would ban all abortions unless there is a "serious health risk" to the pregnant mother. Doctors who perform abortions can face up to 99-years in prison.
Ivey released a statement, reading, "To the bill’s many supporters, this legislation stands as a powerful testament to Alabamians' deeply held belief that every life is precious and that every life is a sacred gift from God.
"To all Alabamians, I assure you that we will continue to follow the rule of law. No matter one’s personal view on abortion, we can all recognize that, at least for the short term, this bill may similarly be unenforceable," Ivey continued. "The sponsors of this bill believe that it is time, once again, for the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit this important matter, and they believe this act may bring about the best opportunity for this to occur," Ivey added.
