"We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war," Trump said during an address from Mar-a-Lago. "He was planning a very major attack and we got him," Trump said during a speech to Evangelicals for Trump in Miami. "General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region," The Pentagon said in a statement. Soleimani is responsible for the Quds Force attacks on coalition bases in Iraq, the US embassay attack in Baghdad on December 1 killing, and for a strike on December 27 killing an American contractor and Iraqi personnel. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised "harsh vengeance" against the United States in response to Soleimani's death. After the attack, Trump tweeted a photo of the American flag.
