 Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei promised "harsh vengeance" on the United States in response to Iran's top military figure, Qasem Soleimani's death. "A harsh vengeance awaits the criminals who have the blood of him (General Soleimani) and the other martyrs of last night’s incident on their hands," Khameni said. Soleimani, was killed in airstrikes at a Baghdad airport in Iraq on Friday morning at the direction of President Donald Trump. "We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war," Trump said during an address from Mar-a-Lago. "He was planning a very major attack and we got him," Trump said during a speech to Evangelicals for Trump in Miami. "General Soleimani was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region," The Pentagon said in a statement. Soleimani is responsible for the Quds Force attacks on coalition bases in Iraq, the US embassy attack in Baghdad on December 1 killing, and for a strike on December 27 killing an American contractor and Iraqi personnel. After the attack, Trump tweeted a photo of the American flag.
