Former first "lady" Michelle Obama claimed in her new memoir Becoming that she "stopped even trying to smile" at President Donald Trump's inauguration in January 2017. Obama recalled the passage while in an interview with ABC's Robin Roberts. Michelle wrote that the "celebratory" feeling she felt during former President Obama's inauguration faded on Trump's inauguration.
She claims that after "realizing it" she didn't make an effort to hide her bitter mood. She wrote, "Someone from Barack’s administration might have said that the optics there were bad, that what the public saw didn’t reflect the president’s reality or ideals. But in this case, maybe it did. Realizing it, I made my own optic adjustment. I stopped even trying to smile."
